ChatGPT can now remember what you asked it a year ago and show you the exact conversation. This new memory upgrade for Plus and Pro users turns old chats into something searchable, permanent, and surprisingly useful.

Its memory is now so good that you can ask it about that chili sauce recipe you requested a year ago, and there’s a good chance it will find it, complete with a link back to the exact conversation.

Before the most recent memory upgrade, if you asked ChatGPT what you were talking about a year ago, it would usually respond with some version of “I don’t actually have a window into your full chat history going back a year,” followed by a handful of fairly ineffectual suggestions involving digging through your browser history.

Now, instead, it flashes up a “remembering” message and then hits you with exactly what you were asking it a year ago.

As a Plus user, I just tried it — and it’s actually pretty impressive. I typed:

“What was I asking you a year ago?”

What I got back was a detailed breakdown of everything I’d been asking it at the time. Apparently, I was going through a phase of asking ChatGPT to analyze Nicolas Winding Refn films. If you’ve ever watched any of them, you’ll probably understand why I needed a bit of help.

Thanks to the Sources feature in ChatGPT, you can now jump straight back into those exact chats from a year ago. Click Sources at the bottom of the reply and a panel opens, showing direct links to the original conversations.

This is genuinely impressive. Suddenly, chats don’t feel disposable any more. I’ve long since moved on from trying to decipher the inner workings of Refn’s mind, but it was fascinating to revisit those conversations.

If you’re a Plus or Pro user, you can try this yourself right now. There’s no need to update ChatGPT — just ask it what you were asking a year ago, and you might be surprised by what comes back. The feature has rolled out globally to all ChatGPT Plus and Pro users today.
