The First ‘Faces of Death’ Teaser Is Here to Remind You That Yes, They Remade ‘Faces of Death’

Of all the cult-classic horror titles to get remade or rebooted, Faces of Death seemed among the most unlikely. A faux documentary whose appeal, or disgust factor, hinges on just how “faux” the viewer believes it to be, the 1978 original claims to present real footage of actual deaths in various contexts. That includes war, animal attacks, and accidents—as well as more out-there investigations of cults and the supernatural.

The “mondo movie” trend faded, despite several Faces of Death sequels, but found footage horror is a close cousin, and it’s been going strong for decades, with the V/H/S series in particular keeping it at the forefront of the genre. So maybe the time is right for Faces of Death—circa 2026, a time when technological trickery means any horrible thing you can imagine can become a shockingly believable viral video—to hit screens.

We first heard about a new Faces of Death in the works back in 2021; in 2023, an update (including casting) arrived. Today we’ve got a first teaser, as well as an April 10 release date confirmation.

While we know this is a Legendary Entertainment release, the generic handle crafted to release this (age-restricted and unlisted) YouTube video is clearly and cleverly designed to make Faces of Death feel like you’re watching something you’ve just happened upon—and maybe shouldn’t be looking at. Just like the original, in other words.

Also like the original: the retro typeface and skull logo, formed from the grainy black-and-white footage that flashes by in the teaser.

Though we don’t have more to go on than this brief clip and the release date, reports from 2023 as the project (directed by Daniel Goldhaber, who made Cam and How to Blow Up a Pipeline) was in production noted a cast that includes Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria), Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), and pop star turned actor Charlie XCX.

With the involvement of those big names, it’s clear a narrative framing will be at play here. That makes sense since the original’s “this is all real” claims have been debunked for decades.

But with that macabre mystery being Faces of Death‘s main appeal back in the day, will a new version hold up—or will it be just another found-footage horror flick on an ever-growing list?

We’ll find out when Faces of Death hits theaters April 10.
